OMG THIS VID.

Thank you so much, dear vidder! It's beautiful and spooky and mysterious, and really, really makes me want to play the games! Oh, those landscapes, the magical and unsettling books, the heights and the depths. I love this so much.

I'm so happy you love it! Without your request I doubt I would have made it so soon. The games may have the reputation of being hard to play, but if you can get ahold of them, the payoff to them is extremely high. You can get lost in the story in a way that's completely different from other media. The vid doesn't even show the massive amount of detail you can encounter. You're so very welcome! ♥

I only ever played the first Myst game (and read a few of the novel tie-ins, heh), so there's a lot of story here I'm not familiar with, but even with canon unfamiliarity I was really excited to see a vid of a computer game here in Festivids. :D And I liked the way you structured it, bookending it with the book, heh.

For a long time, the only games I'd played were Myst and one level of Myst III, and just this year I cracked open the rest of them, and fell head over heels in love with that world. They pull you in! Thank you for commenting on the bookends. I'm really proud of them.

Strange and lovely, just like the games. I love the emulation of the mechanics of gameplay, and how you've cut the vid to work with rather than conceal them; and how the musical iteration comments on both the story and the gameplay. Everything fits so gorgeously together that it all becomes that much more mysterious. Beautiful work.

I'm so pleased you like that aspect. I knew I had to work with the source in that manner and I'm glad it's plain to see!

This is really cool, and really interesting both as itself and as a vid of computer games--I love how the vid replicates the gameplay to an extent.

Thank you! That aspect was essential to the concept of the vid, because I wanted to convey the journey that the player takes!

This is lovely.

Can I link to this on the Myst community forums? Or should I wait until I can ask directly? I'm not sure what the conventions are.

I'd be flattered if you linked, but if you could wait until after the reveal (that happens on February 5th), I would prefer if you did so. Thank you!

I'm so pleased you liked it! If you're still interested in showing it to others, feel free to copy the link up there in the post that says 'signed vid post'. That will direct people to my journal, which I'd prefer if this goes outside the communities of Livejournal and Dreamwidth. Thank you!

I'm surprised by how well embracing mechanical movements, text, people breaking the fourth wall etc. works here, and how much it contributes to the overall effect. It's a beguiling mysterious and atmospheric vid (the swirling landscapes at 1:18-1:34 are especially nice to watch and I particularly like the burn effect at 1:51 and the blue flashes at 2:01-2) and hypnotic, too: I was surprised each time I watched it that it's not under two minutes long.

You know fanfiction that is written in the second person? "You walk here, you do this"? I had that in mind when making this vid, because I had to tell a story that people would understand.

Thanks for letting me know what worked for you! I added the burn effect, but the flashes are in the source itself. And that's the ultimate compliment that it pulled you in so much you lost track of time! Thank you!

I remember how revolutionary the first game was when it came out! And how much I sucked at it! That annoying blowing wind sound is still stuck in my head.

I love what you did with the books and pages.

Heh, heh. I am so with you there on how difficult it is to play. I'm very proud of the books and pages; they did exactly what I wanted them to do.

I'm over the moon that it did that for you! At its core, Myst is a very tragic tale, and I did my best to convey some of that. Thank you!
