Lyrics
I, I wish you could swim

Like the dolphins, like dolphins can swim

Though nothing,

nothing will keep us together

We can beat them, for ever and ever

Oh we can be Heroes,

just for one day

I, I will be queen

And you, you will be king

Though nothing will drive them away

We can be Heroes, just for one day

We can be us, just for one day

I, I can remember (I remember)

Standing, by the wall (by the wall)

And the guns shot above our heads

(over our heads)

And we kissed,

as though nothing could fall

(nothing could fall)

And the shame was on the other side

Oh we can beat them, for ever and ever

Then we could be Heroes,

just for one day

Oh, I love this. I had no idea that Scala did a cover of Heroes, but it's really great for Harriet's POV here. So many wonderful lyric ties telling their story and her conflict: Harriet wishing she could "swim" as easily as Peter seems to, but she can't. Her walking away from him at the end of Strong Poison on "nothing will keep us together". The lovely moments of working together "just for one day" on the first refrain. The dancing scenes on "queen" and "king" - wonderful. The punt scene on "we can be us"! And I love how you have "standing by the wall" draw a line from the false murder charge to the more internal but no less dangerous conflict in Gaudy Night and how Harriet wrestles with both the whole time, until she finally decides fuck it and kisses him. Love the ending, with the scene on the field, and the driving, and then the bookend with Peter playing for her, basically accompanying her voice throughout the vid. Lovely. <3

I'm not familiar with the source, but I love how the subdued cover of Heroes you chose, paired with the images, evoked a very bittersweet mood. I felt like I was hearing the woman tell the story of how she and her lover failed to get a happy ending, but that she'd gained a lot of wisdom in the process and had made peace with her past. I could be way off base, but regardless, it's a lovely vid!

Aww. I haven't seen this adaptation in years. The melancholiness of the song really suits Harriet.
