Date: 2013-01-20 11:42 pm (UTC)So, as you may be able to tell from my icon (which is my ONLY icon), I love Amelie to bits. It is one of my favourite films ever, I can't count how many times I've watched it, and Amelie herself has been one of my heroes for the longest time (not to mention she is COMPLETELY BEAUTIFUL) - I am SO THRILLED that you have made a vid about her for me!
I love they way the vid maintains the dreamlike quality created in the opening credits, through heightened colour and motion - the jump cuts and little zooms and flashes of light and the colour filter - but in a way that highlights rather than distracts from the innate beauty of the film.
I love so many little moments I can't list them all,so here's just a few - all the shots that take time to register the nuances of Amelie's expression, the wonderful Zorro swish, the 'writing your tragedy' bit, the textures section towards the end, and the 'boundless pleasure' cheek stroking shot (one of my favourite moments in the film). Amelie's story is all about taking pleasure in the small details of life, and this vid completely captures that, both in the choice of shots and in the deft, delicate way it handles them.
I love that it tells Amelie's story without being too linear, yet still has a clear emotional arc and a sense of purpose. (Being overly-linear is something I always struggle with in my own vids, and really admire when people manage to avoid it!)
The parallels are lovely - all the shots at the beginning of doors and windows closing on Amelie, and the way she is always looking through glass at other people (just like l'Homme de Verre) - the repeated use of shots of the girl with the glass in the Renoir painting are very affecting, as are all the little objects that you show together near the end (the tin, the gnome, the letter) that represent Amelie's way of making contact with people. Until the last shot! Finally clinging to another person! The ending of the film is so beautiful, I'm glad you kept it here.
Oh, and the song is perfect. I had never heard it before, but definitely need to get hold of it.
