Lyrics
Here dwell together still two men of note
Who never lived and so can never die:
How very near they seem, yet how remote
That age before the world went all awry.
But still the game's afoot for those with ears
Attuned to catch the distant view-halloo:
England is England yet, for all our fears--
Only those things the heart believes are true.

A yellow fog swirls past the window-pane
As night descends upon this fabled street:
A lonely hansom splashes through the rain,
The ghostly gas lamps fail at twenty feet.
Here, though the world explode, these two survive,
And it is always eighteen ninety-five.

So glad it worked for you! It was very much an experiment, and I wasn't sure how people would like it.

(Apologies for this coming so late-the feedback is much, much appreciated! RL stuff was in the process of chewing me up and spitting me out during Festivids reveal, but I am now shakily standing back up!)

Thank you so much! I really wasn't sure if it would resonate with people, but the poem brings me to tears every time. The song has such good movement at the end too--just perfect for their wackiness.

Thank you so much! I spent a lot of time with my classical music collection trying to find something that would work with the poem instead of fighting it.

ALL THE FEELS. There are a few readings of the poem floating around out there, but I had heard the Starrett reading once and knew it *had* to be *that* one. Took a bit of doing, but I eventually found it again!

...and it always eighteen ninety-five.

Yes, this, too, is an adaptation of ACD's canon.

I haven't gotten around to Mouse Detective yet -- still working on 22nd Century and the 1950s Howard -- but I very much appreciate anything that firmly contextualizes the Mouse Detective as a part of that long, long lineage of adaptations.
