Date: 2016-02-17 09:30 am (UTC)I love how you start out with those beautiful sun clips of older Troye remembering the younger boys with the more rainbow, outer sun clips and how it sets up both the look of the vid as well as the remembering concept. The text looks absolutely beautiful and I particularly love the clips at 0:06 from the push to the young Troye look to the sun once again in the center with older Troye, it looks so seamless. Then that transitions perfectly to the tree climbing sun clip coming in on the beat with the sun getting bigger to the music, SO COOL. I love the legs swinging up to the music and then the boy swinging down, great use of internal motion! I really like how you have them start walking out with their bikes as they slowly start riding along and begin the adventure together and all the bike climbs land so well on the beat and transition so well to young Troye being in the same camera position at 0:16 as you transition to them being far away from each other and yearning for more.
You bring the PAIN and angst from the beginning with one of my favorite shots from the music videos with Matthew curled up in a ball and his precious sad crying face just guts me everytime I see it. Why is he SO PRETTY when he cries though? But seriously, that completely captures the pain of hurting from falling in love with someone especially with the "are you going to hurt" lyric and I love how that sets up why Troye needs to hold him especially for someone like me who knows the videos well so you can just allude to the father but not show him, really deftly done there. I like how you do the same thing with the finger touching (love how its highlighted hitting the heavy beat) kids and compare it to him touching his back when he's older ("take my heart" fits so perfectly!) while adding his holding facial reactions matches the singer's emotions so well. I absolutely love how you use the " love you in the dark, no one has to see" lyric with them being together in private with the two boys constructing the white sheet fort to surround them and keep them safe from the world which flows together so well. I love how you have that heavy beat again with the full finger touching and realizing of love shot and how his eyes open to transition into Troye's eyes being open as well.
I really love how you match the "I-i-i" to Troye's mouth slightly moving like he's saying it almost but also his eyelash blinks down on the second i and transitions to the next clip on the third clip, so cool! The clothes hangers on fingertips is the cutest clip and I love how he's reaching out to Troye on "I want more" which represents it so well and kid Troye's adorable smile is too cute there. I love that the playful hand motion goes left to right and then you have the kids yelling while moving their bikes left to right and the shouting captures that "yes more!" happiness feeling so well. But I love how right after that you have that beautifully framed shot of them holding each other, remembering more and wanting more in that moment which throughout this section adds an extra layer of emotional resonance. I love how you hit that clap again with the great clip of the coin going through the fingers which represents that *goal* of the more they want so well. I love how you have two shots of them celebrating together and I really like how you zoom in on the second clip which adds both a deeper feeling of closeness to them and adds an interesting visual component. You choose the perfect clips of older Troye to juxtapose the younger clips there, he looks so deeply in rememberance there and softly nostalgic that the emotion comes through so well. I really love the clap on the beat and how it flows into putting his hands up and how that perfectly represents the pure joy and happiness older Troye wants on "more" and then I love how you make that more explicit with the more being the hugging. I LOVE how you zoom in on it to that unique sound/fade in the music as they match so well together and it makes it look visually so freaking cool.
I love how you use the change of the music to go back to Troye on the balcony looking down and pining away from the distance (love how it fits the similarity of the music from the beginning)and I love how you have the clips hit the beat and yet the fades make it much softer to make it fit better with the mood of the music. I love how the sun clip at 0:45 fades into young Troye squnting at the sun, it works so well and I love how you parallel young and older Troye. I love how the sun brightens to the beat at 0:51and leads into the plant shot which looks sooo good and I love how it's like the boys are trying to escape from being kept apart and the imagery is just so gorgeous. "You see yourself in another way" IS SO HEARTBREAKINGLY true with Matthew trying to be like his dad in the overalls and beautiful use of the young kid sitting by himself shot. I love how you have that shot with Matthew in the sun at 0:57 beautifull transition into the closeup shot to the music which beautifully shows his conflicted emotion. I love how you show Troye searching for him like he can't find him when he's pretending to be someone else and how "I can't ever change" is Troye looking for him and nodding at him, SOOO CUTE. Then that beautiful transition to Matthew's poor suffering face just kills me with the emotional conflict and that wide shot and the play fighting (and "ooh" emotional voice) makes it feel so much more epic and powerful.
I love how you juxtapose the happy boys running outside clips with Troye laying in his room sad, it makes the discrepency hided and adds a wonderful extra emotional layer. I really love that you used that additional external source, really great idea! I also LOVE the parallel between "watch your body lie" being two boys laying down at the beach and Troye lying on his bed watching the ceiling light (nice hit on the beat), the fake sun just as memories can never be real like the real thing. I love that "makes me feel better" is young Matthew with his arm around Troye and then those great parallel clips of their young and old selves walking together are so perfect with the great curtains running together shot and smiling beach clip on "satisfied" making me SO HAPPY. I love how that leads to the ohh ohhs of the boys holding each other running in circles, like they can't control it works so well with the emotion coming out of those "satisfied" happy shots. LOVE how you parallel it with the older guys playing around, throwing stuff at each other on "bring it back" being the boys messing around when they were young, like how they can have that kind of relationship with each other again, sooo cute.
I love the use of the two crabs coming together shot, just like the two boys are coming together and then the "want it" clip being fixing the hat is a great mood changer to making it about realizing feelings and loving how someone looks. And then I love Troye's little look down and how it's like you know me cause that shot of Matthew looking up on "looks like that" is where I am most attracted to him and OMG HES SO HOT WHO WOULDNT WANT HIM??? I love that you do a closeup shot of it on the beat so you can see the pretty even more. Then I love that fade to confused Troye with the closeup being used to highlight the pain works sooo well and hurts so beautifully especially with those emotional ohhhs. I love Troye trying to hold him on "I want you to stay" and Matthew pushing him away breaks my heart so much :( I love how you have Mathhew running away on "stay" and then the next beat fits so well with the sound reaction to that as the movement in the clip of Troye fits so well with the music and highlights how his world is shaken. And OH GOD Troye looking at him and the girl holding hands HURTS my heart sooo bad every time with him begging to "look my way" and getting nothing and that little head turn back to the music.
I love the clips you chose of Troye looking at Matthew on "Are you going to hurt?" where they're both hurting for various reasons and making me so sad and looking SO PRETTY doing it. I love how "answer me" rests on Troye's contemplative face as he then thinks back to "let me take your heart" being the KISS OMG I LOVE IT!!! I love how you go to the kiss closeup on the beat and seamlessly transition to the touching shots on faded on the beats looks so beautiful and expresses "love you in the dark" sooo well (especially with the previous girl clips). The "dark" taking off his shirt clip is particularly perfect and I love the different angles of the kiss with "mmhm" being the kiss fading into the finger puppets where the two boys first realize feelings, just so beautiful and emotional. I LOVE the use of the flower clip which is sooo gorgeous and represents that feeling of first love and innocence and beauty of their love so well and works so well with the simple, happy beach shots. "I want more" being on Matthew touching Troye's hair and you letting that linger is SO CUTE and perfect and I love the juxtaposition of that touch with them touching in the bedroom. I LOVE that neck shot you use to break up the shot and show the desire in the skin he wants to touch and the eye shot on the beat looks so great as it feels like he realizes what he wants there before he goes for it in the next shot.
I love the push down that goes SO well with the music and the "I-i-i" of the lyrics that transitions so well with the kiss and hand over skin on "I want more" is SO meaningful and deeply intimately sexy. And I love that parallel with Troye pulling Matthew over at the beach and wanting to touch him there as well. That is actually one of my favorite clips of the vid and I love that it ends the section with maximum romantic feels and that he pulls him over at the end right to the beat. I LOVE how you transition to the music change of the next section with the blue plant shots that look so pretty while also dulling the color and showing the emotional turmoil that Troye is going through that you perfectly represent with those funeral putting on his tie clips (I love how his hands go down to the music at 2:08). I love how you use the sad clips of Troye in the yellow room as he imagines the happy days of his youth with the perfectly picked pulling the covers over that sounds so much like the music along with the boys little smiles together. I LOVE how you parallel older Troye being alone in his room watching TV while the two boys watch together and I love how the TV turns onto the beat and beautifully fades into young Matthew pointing to the screen with then that closeup of it matching with the music so, so well. I love how the two boys looking up at the screen contrasts so well with older Troye looking down sad and I love how that contrast continues with the happy shots of the boys playing in the ocean that looks bright and blue compared to the yellow of the room. I love the parallel of being in the water as boys to rubbing water on his face to wake himself up, that was such a great idea!
I love the shot of him looking out the window wanting more and that fits so well with his touching the grave shot. I love how that clip fades into a shot of Matthew like he wants to touch him and that the Matthew shot hits the beat so well while setting up him walking over to Troye. I LOVE how the "oh" is the hand down on his shoulder and then the latter "oh" is Troye looking up and it's so beautiful how he rises to the rise in the music. That whole section represents "bring it back" PERFECTLY but I especially love Matthew's little look down and Troye's blink down as he's SO IN LOVE OMG. I love that closeup of Troye's face on the beat which looks like it's processing the moment and the "want it" face is SO perfect with the lip touching calling the kiss back into memory. You KNOW ME because again you chose the perfect clips for "looks like that" as Matthew looks insanely pretty as he looks over at Troye (so great with the lyrics) and that fucking gorgeous suit clip with that lovely motion down that flows perfectly into the ohhs. I love that somber look you use of Troye at the funeral on the last ohh which makes it seem like he's remembering everything which leads beautifully into that GREAT visual and symbolic parallel shots of Troye touching Matthew as young Matthew touches Troye with "want you to stay" making it SO emotionally sweet. But then you break my heart again with the handholding parallel on the street and then Troye turning away when Matthew won't look his way :(
I love how you always choose the perfect clips for Matthew hurting as the funeral looking down and crying into his hands clips fit SO WELL and make me feel so bad for him which works particularly well with him having to fake the preceding clips. I love how the clip at 2:57 has his hand going down to the music as you've done several times earlier in the vid and then how that motion is repeated as his head goes down. I LOVE that "let me take your heart" is Troye pulling Matthew's head into his hands to the music and it's so beautiful and romantic AND FULL OF FEELS! That scene also works so well with "love you in the dark, no one has to see" with the girl seeing their private moment so Troye has to let go. I love how you go back to the boys not wanting to leave each other on "I-i-i want more" and how that sadly transitions to Matthew giving in and leaving Troye but with that strong look back on the beat that displays all his conflicted emotion and how much he wants to stay. The "I want more" hurts SO much here with how much Troye wants a real relationship and yet he keeps losing it even when he gets a little. I love how you use the parallel leg running shots from kids to adults to the emotional I's, hitting them right on the beat. It KILLS me how how you have more be both the ocean rocks down below (palm grasp awww) and then the kids jumping together be "I want more" showing his conflicting desires and then the eye closes at the end haunt my soul and break my heart and ahhhh I love it!!!

I'm so proud of this vid and still can't believe I made it! Sometimes I really surprise myself lol. It would have never happened if you hadn't requested it for Festivids, so I want to thank you for that!
I’m so glad that you enjoyed the extra sources that I added to the video. I saw potential in using them to add more to the video and to up that emotional feeling. I’m happy it all worked out! (and who doesn’t want more close up shots of Troye?! :P )
It's funny because "Memo" wasn't my favorite Years & Years song as well. Until one day, I watched Olly perform a live version of this song and I realized just how emotional it was. It won me over and I fell in love with it. When Troyes "Wild" and “Fools” music videos came out, I had this song in mind to use for the vid, but I needed to still wait on “Talk Me Down” music video to be released. I was hoping that this was going to be the final music video to make “Memo” happen. When It finally released, I screamed and was jumping up and down. It was exactly what I needed and I would have been gutted if it didn’t work with Memo and my vision for it. So basically this video wouldn’t have ever happened if “Talk Me Down” didn’t have the conclusion and direction I needed it to go in.
I'm so overwhelmed with joy just knowing how much this means to you! <3 Seriously thank you so much for sharing this all with me!
