Summary: "Silent Fandoms" might not be a vid, because it doesn't entirely follow the form. This behind the scenes video isn't a vid, because it's comprised of excerpts from festivid gifts that never existed. Everything was made specifically for use in "Silent Fandoms". Fandom/recipient pairings were largely taken from this list: http://www.festivids.net/festivids/sign-up/history. Including them here should be considered a behind the scenes extra, not an actual vid or gift proper, though I hope those who recieved snippets find some measure of joy in them.
Content notes: Most of these fandoms I've never actually watched and as such the song choices (when songs are used) are largely based on wikipedia, bad puns, and guesses. Footage is typically whatever trailer I could find on YouTube. The quality, therefore, ranges widely. I tried to avoid imagery that obviously contained sexual violence, but I can't be 100% positive, as I'm not familiar with most of these fandoms. Like "Silent Fandoms" there is Hollywood-style violence, NSFW sex & nudity, and physical triggers. Typos in credits will be fixed by reveals.

This is amazing. I'm going to have to watch this many more times before I can say anything cogent other than: omg, I love fandom SO MUCH, and this vid is a perfect example of why. The creativity, the meta-commentary, the dedication, the behind-the-scenes time and energy, the love that went into this -- I am blown away.

thingswithwings: festivids! (yt - festivids! for the restavids!)
From: [personal profile] thingswithwings
OK WOW. This is such a huge, amazing, beautiful thing that you've made - and I can't even imagine the amount of work that went into it! (or, lol, I can, b/c I remember making the Yuletide vid, which I was tickled to see show up in this vid!). I think it was a super interesting choice to put together the idea of "festivids - small fandoms" and "4'33'' - silence" - and I really thought all the quotes from vidders about how "loud" their fandom is grounded that idea beautifully. And I love how you included yourself (is that you???) blurred out eating dinner as you go through the arduous process of putting all this together. This vid is so reflective and weird and interesting, and I'm so happy that you made it. I had no idea what I'd get (if anything) when I requested it, and this surpassed anything I could imagine.

Also, I LOOOOOVE all the mini-vids you made - what an undertaking! I loved so many that I can't remember them all right now, but some of my faves were the Bewitched/I Dream of Jeannie crossover, my Mary and Max and Noah's Arc ones (can't wait for the music on that latter one!), The Incredible Hulk, Batman, Inspector Spacetime, Wing Chun (lollll), Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Double Happiness, The Sapphires, and Hong Gil Dong (off the top of my head!).

Seriously, thank you so much for this - it's the coolest gift to receive and I think it's a fascinating work of art. <3

<3<3<3 Thank you again!

You probably know this by now, but the Double Happiness, The Sapphires, & Wing Chun snippets were all by [personal profile] sanguinity! Her snippets are the best snippets seriously. But I'm also very glad that you love my Bewitched/I Dream of Jeannie snippet & my Hong Gil Dong one -- I couldn't resist filling some of my own previous requests. (Also a great use for a Hong Gil Dong vid that has been unfinished for years. Someday I'll finish it! Maybe.)

So I wrote that comment before I watched the bonus material and now all I've got is key smash and laughter and tears and awe. I am super excited that even a snippet of a Daugters of the Dust vid (with perfect song) exists, and as predicted even a little of the hand clapping scenes in the Color Purple (also with cool song choice) instantly turned me into a hot crying mess. Plus When Night is Falling (ugh vid of my heart!), Wing Chun (lols for days), Noah's Arc (perfect and totally curious about song now), Secretary (now I don't have to make that vid!), Janelle Monae (of course Sun Ra!), Double Happiness, Sapphires, Batman, Bewitched/I Dream of Jeannie (genius), Slo Mo Guys, Idlewild and so many more; I want all of these now but I'm so happy with the snippets you gave us. Kudos to you!

I haven't quite got my head wrapped around this yet. I really want to download it and see it full size, after reveals. What I can say is that I've never seen anything quite like this, and I really like it. I like the commentary on fandom and how we pursue it, I like the snapshot of Festivids as more than a compilation of vid excerpts, but a process, an obsession. Thanks for making this.

Holy crap, this is amazing. I can't even begin to imagine how much work went into this, but my god, you are a trooper. The snippets are wonderful, some of them had me laughing out loud (60s Batman, Incredible Hulk and Wing Chun), others made me clutch my chest in delight (MAID MARIAN! Kung Fu Hustle!), a couple made me go 'noooooo' when they ended because they were so gorgeous (the one with the acrobats that I can't remember the name of! That little moment where her breath catches? *HANDS*), and more than a few made me want to check out some of these silent fandoms. An absolutely unbelievable undertaking, I know I'll be coming back to this many times.

On the one hand, I'm surprised only one vidder tried to take on Festivids as a fandom, but looking at the sheer, yawning scope of this... I am awed by what you took on here.

I love the Cageoid idea of turning the festival inside out and listening to the "silent" fandoms, and I also love your interstitial discussion -- in words and images and sound -- of what "silent" might mean in context. And also the Magritteoid paradox of "not" being a vid composed of "not"-vids of "un"-vidded fandoms! It's a very elegant idea, with a lot of depth, and even after several watches the idea continues to expand for me.

And the excerpts from the Festivids Masterlist that Never Existed...! It is such a tantalizing well of potential that Festivids draws from, and has only just begun to tap. I so dearly wish some of these hypothetical vids existed in full, and I am more than a touch curious about many of these fandoms.

(FYI, my own personal soundtrack for the vid included the kitty chasing a buckeye around the inside of an Amazon box. Which normally annoys me hugely if I'm trying to watch a vid, but seemed very appropriate here.)

This is one of the most brilliant examples I've ever seen of getting inside the box and then breaking it. As one of your recipients, thank you for making what is probably the most perfect Galileo vid that will ever exist (and I mean that with utmost sincerity as I've often listened to the Indigo Girls' version of "Galileo" with a mind to making it for that fandom; now I don't have to).

I think what fascinates me most about the process of vidding is the internal process of idea leading to idea and then the external work of making it actual, like sparks along a fuse. The multiplicity of visuals laid out in scrapbook-like fashion along the timeline of your vid set to the ambience of your chosen tracks mimics the external process of gathering source, pausing to go live life, pushing around clips to see what works -- all the nitty-gritty of vidding.

So very meta; so very good. You gave a voice to our silent fandoms and captured the essence of 'vidding' as a fannish involvement in a marvelous way.
