Lyrics
"Leave Her, Johnny"

I thought I heard the Old Man say:

"Leave her, Johnny, leave her."

Tomorrow ye will get your pay,

and it's time for us to leave her.

(Chorus)

Leave her, Johnny, leave her!

Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her!

For the voyage is long and the winds don't blow

And it's time for us to leave her.

Oh, the wind was foul and the sea ran high

Leave her, Johnny, leave her!

She shipped it green and none went by.

And it's time for us to leave her.

(Chorus)

I hate to sail on this rotten tub.

"Leave her, Johnny, leave her!"

No grog allowed and rotten grub.

And it's time for us to leave her.

(Chorus)

We swear by rote for want of more.

"Leave her, Johnny, leave her!"

But now we're through so we'll go on shore.

And it's time for us to leave her.

(Chorus)

Oh, my dear Festividder, thank you! This is really wonderful, capturing the grit and dirt of the film (and making use of so much of the source's amazing cinematography). This was a hard damn life and both the music and the way you've constructed the vid don't let you forget. Wonderful, thanks again!

What a lovely vid! I liked the song choice, which I hadn't heard before, and using something that sounded like it could have been written at the time of the story.

And I loved how "leave her" kept changing meaning, first going went through all the worst times, when everyone really did want to get the hell off the ship and probably never see an ocean again (and that poor guy literally leaping to his death), to simply meaning "go ashore," to Maturin's decision to abandon his discoveries, and finally to us, the viewers, bidding a reluctant farewell to the ship and its men and the movie.

The song itself seems to have its origins at least s far back as the mid-1800's. The version I used is one of my favorite shanties from the Assassin's Creed IV soundtrack.

Anyway, thank you so much for the lovely comments!
